Chipotle, known for its animated short films over the past years promoting the quality of their ingredients, takes it a step farther with a four part comedy series premiering February 17 on Hulu. The comedy series Farmed and Dangerous is that snarky look at what is being done to our food.

Myth and Moonshine – serious drinks and Louisiana fare

My only run in with grain alcohol was at a frat party at the University of Maryland circa so far back you won’t believe I’m that old. It was grain alcohol mixed with punch and served from a trash can. The after effect, i.e. hangover, was not pretty. I remember working the breakfast shift at my part-time job at the drug store fountain the next day. Someone ordered and egg over easy and I said we were out of them but they could have a scrambled egg…it was that bad.

Moonshine has come a long way since then, first and foremost, Tennessee, Nebraska and Kansas have legalized moonshine production and there are a handful of brands available. Most can be tasted at the Canton pub Myth and Moonshine. There are unflavored moonshines (i.e. Midnight Moon Corn, Shine XXX White Whiskey )or flavored (i. e. Midnight Moon Blueberry, Ole Smoky Peach or Shine XXX Libertea) all and all approximately 70 plus moonshines. The combinations are a mixologist’s dream . My favorite was the straight up shot of the Ole Smoky Peach.

Top pho restaurants in Baltimore

With the hullabalooabout pop-up ramen restaurants and ramen nights here in Baltimore I thought this would be a good time to remind you of our other “noodle” options.  What better way than Vietnamese pho.

Pho, properly spelled is really phở but since most of us won’t write it or search for it with the Vietnamese accents it shall be written pho. Properly pronounced one would say “fuh.” Pho is a Vietnamese broth highlighted with cinnamon, clove and star anise, served with rice noodles, thin cuts of meat, herbs, bean sprouts, lime and optional hot sauces and hoisin sauce.

Learn the top pho restaurants, enjoy the slideshow and learn how to make pho HERE.

Icing Smiles – Escape and positive memories for families in need

Icing Smiles is a nonprofit organization that provides custom celebration cakes and other treats to families impacted by the critical illness of a child.  They understand that the simple things, like a cake, are luxuries to a family battling illness.  Their goal is to create a custom cake for the ill child, or their sibling, that provides a temporary escape from worry and creates a positive memory during a difficult time.

Icing Smiles is a national organization with its roots in Baltimore.  It is here in Baltimore this year’s cocktail fundraiser, the Buttercream Ball –Winter Wonderland, will take place on February 8 at 7 p.m. at the Great Room at Historic Savage Mill – live entertainment, dancing, sweet and savory edibles, amazing sugar art along with a silent auction.  Tickets are  $75 each and can be purchased here.
