Don't send a man to the grocery store

I just watched an entertaining video about one man's journey to the grocery store as relayed by his wife. The video is below for your enjoyment. It made me stop and think, my husband does pretty well at the store, he likes to shop, in fact, he has the shopping gene. There are moments like this week when he picked up yellow mustard and Grey Poupon Dijon with Horseradish..... Read the full story and watch the video: Don't send a man to the grocery store

Top Chefs come to National Aquarium for sustainable cooking dining series

It’s a fact Jack! Yes indeed, I just got my e-mail from the National Aquarium confirming what they are hosting another in their series of Fresh Thoughts through Sustainable Seafood featuring Top Chef contestants. Get schedule and see which Top Chef contestants will be part of this series.

EggWatchers - it entertains you while you boil an egg -FUN

A very clever website called EggWatchers calculates how long it will take to boil an egg. It asks you questions. Want to boil an egg? Do you want it soft boiled, squigley or firm? Is it a small, medium, large or extra large egg? Is it just out of the fridge or more room temp? Once it takes in all the facts it calculates the time to boil the egg and then pops up a video to entertain you....Read the rest of the story and get the link:

chocri is a German startup, founded in September 2008, but launched in the US in January 2010. They allow you to customize your own chocolate bar on their website. You get to choose a base chocolate (white, dark or milk chocolate), and then your favorites out of more than 100 toppings. Those can be nuts and dried fruit, but they can also be real gold flakes, roasted almonds, pretzel, chive rolls, jalapenos... you name it! They hand-make the bars in Germany, and ship them to you.

Authentic Azerbaijani cuisine - far from your typical kebob restaurant -video

The Caucasus mountain range north of Azerbaijan was the inspiration for the restaurant name Kavkaz, Kavkaz Kebab. Azerbaijan has had a tumultuous history, other countries ruling it only recently to become independent of Russia, who ruled from 1920 to 1991. The bordering countries to Azerbaijan have influenced their cuisine reflecting flavors from Iran, Georgia, Turkey and Russia. Rather than what one might consider Russian influenced foods of beets, herring and smoked fish the flavors are more Middle Eastern. Don’t let the kebab name predetermine what you believe the food will be like, I did, and I was wrong.

First night out for Restaurant Week – my week in food - recipes

At this moment, early Saturday morning, I still feel so full from my first foray out on Restaurant Week. The husband tends to be slow deciding where he wants to go but I got a request two days ago he wanted to go to the Prime Rib. Of course reservations for 6:30, 7:00 and 7:30 were totally booked. Our reservation 5:30 p.m. for Friday (last night) which meant we wouldn’t have to wait, we found parking easily on the street and the noise level would be low.

2010 Ultimate Baltimore Wings Contest – your vote counts

I love chicken wings and so do so many others, I bet you do too. I don’t like sharing my wings with the husband, he reaches in and takes the mini drummette pieces and leaves me with the less meatier pieces of wing. If I was fast enough he would have fork marks on his hands to keep him from snitching my drummettes. Read the full story & watch video:

Immeasurable Chicken and Waffles – better than Breakfast at Tiffany’s

If every a restaurant had spirit, soul and joy it is Immeasurable Chicken and Waffles. It is located on West Pratt Street, a bit off the beaten path of the downtown restaurant neighborhoods but worth the trip. A Sunday morning jaunt for breakfast with friends proved to be an enjoyable dining experience.

Chilly chili cookoff 2010 at the National Aquarium - Recipes included

I haven’t met a person who makes chili who didn’t think their chili was the best. Chili with meat (beef, pork, lamb, sausage etc) and beans, with chicken, no beans, with no meat topped with onion, cheese and nacho chips or Cincinnati chili over pasta. A friend of mine in Oklahoma, a BBQ competitor, cried out that there are no beans in real chili. Chili, like many foods, is subjective to what you have grown up eating and what makes the best chili is weighted in childhood memories.

The Gin Mill - much more than I expected

Over the years I have ridden by the Gin Mill on Boston Street where Fells Point ends and Canton begins. I thought of it as one of many bars in the neighborhood where the 20 year olds partied, never as a restaurant. Brian Lawrence of Style Magazine, one of my dining buds the evening I was there states on his blog “the Gin Mill of old— when both upstairs and downstairs bars would be packed shoulder-to-shoulder on weekends with beer-quaffing revelers.”

Things do change and yet remain the same

Luke and Lester Reeder have owned the Gin Mill for 15 years and for awhile others managed it but the Reeder boys took it back a couple of years ago. As they have matured, the Gin Mill has matured. Read the full report and check out the photo slide show:

Upcoming Italian Cooking Classes - mangia!!!!!

Don't you just love cooking classes? I do, being surrounded with other foodies, people sharing your same passion. Similar to being at a Raven's game of like-minded, purple-decorated fans, just not so many. Many of my friends and dining cohorts come from cooking classes I've attended - we've created cooking/dining clubs or go out to eat on a regular basis. Try a cooking class, they are fulfilling and filling.

Crossing my desk recently have been a number of Italian inspired cooking classes so here are the details for the foodies. Check out the upcoming classes:

Nil by Mouth – could you survive?

Roger Ebert, one of the country’s most recognized movie reviewers just wrote a column about not having the ability to eat or drink anymore. I was polarized – a deer in headlights, frozen in time thinking what life is like having the ability to enjoy food and beverage and if I lost that gift.
